I wouldn’t want to try and guess how many commercials I’ve voiced over the past 25 years, but it’s well into the triple digits. But as I reported to Junior when I came back from this particular session, I have a new favourite.

I recorded at PorkPie Studios / Imprint Music, under the watchful eye (listenful ear?) of Fraser MacDougall (thanks for the shirt, dude) and I said then that I thought the spot was brilliant. Beyond the concept—which is great—the credit for this spot has to go to Second City alumnus Jim Annan for his characterization of the over-compensating host. Perfect. His last line … oozes.

Check it out:

Nice! I do like the guy’s opening line: “You’re still here! That never happens…”

Welcome, Ryan! Yes, I agree - that line is a good one - and it almost seems like a throwaway. Funny you’re stopping by - I think I just added you on Twitter :)

As a matter of fact, there’s a method to my madness: keep visiting - I’ll be posting something Hawaii-centric shortly.

Again, nice to hear from you and we’ll see you in the twitterverse.

Jesse, that’s you!! NOW I recognize your voice. This ad is brilliant — one of the few I don’t mute!

    Thanks, Donna!

My wife Carol is a commercial-muter. She is also keen on developing a device that does it automatically. ( I try to remind her that if everybody did that, I’d be out of a job :)

    Nice work! (I wrote that)

Thanks, Peter. There’s a producer I work with a lot that describes my style as “just some guy talking”—I think he means is as a compliment :)

But enough about me, he said, blushing.

Seriously, I just think that this spot from concept to completion was really bright. When your specialty is in sort of non-retail announces, you tend to see spots when they’re pretty close to completion. It’s amazing how many duds there are that account people and ad agencies are really keen on and have spent a lot of production time and money on (no current clients, I swear it).

It’s also cool that the agency on this did an actual internet buyout. Without getting all solidarność about it, it means that they can really get it out there via the internets, with all the creatives involved getting adequately compensated. So it’s nice to see a media buy that includes this as part of its plan. Speaks well to what we do for a living, that the ‘net becomes a viable place to bring some ad work.

Considering the detrimental affect high fat, sodium laced fast foods have on one’s health, would you consider doing ads for Macdonalds is akin to doing ads for Players or Rothmans? Just asking!

@Murph - They don’t call me anything-for-a-buck Collins for nothing!

Hey, wait a second - aren’t you the same Jim Murphy that gave me the offline tongue-lashing about too many Spinning posts on this blog. Who’s side are you on?

For the record, even though my body is now a temple (albeit a vodka-laced temple — but more spinning posts to come!) I indulged in an Angus burger. Not too shabby at all. Seemed pretty lean, too :)

The comment was made tongue firmly in cheek. I’m sure you knew that but your world wide readership may not have.

    They knew :)
