Wow! K9 cop, I loved that show. One of my absolute favorites. Used to watch it every Saturday with my daughters. Any chance it might come out on DVD?

Great website. Love the part about the “recovering actor”! ;) Take care.

It’s always great to hear from someone who watched the show.

As far as I know, there aren’t any dvd plans. Wish there were – I have a thirteen year old that would have a good laugh at seeing the old man a little more svelte.

If you watched, you’ll recognize Denise as my partner for 3 seasons, and the guy on the left, Rick Forsayeth was the stunt co-ordinator and my double for every show.

    Thanks for leaving the comment…

I love the show “Katts and Dog” I used to watch it religiously when I was growing up! It helped spark my interest in law enforcement, which I’ve now been doing for four years in Toronto. It’s so nice to see my favuourite hero from my youth..and to see a picture of you out front of an establishment in my patrol area! Great website! I always thought you were an actor in hollywood!

Terry: Wow – it’s great to hear that the show had even the slightest bit to do with your vocation. Brilliant.

I still have a number of friends dotted throughout the force. We probably have some mutual acquaintances.
As for Hollywood, we had a look at things down there and I decided I wasn’t a Hollwood kind-of-guy. I’m more of a Bracebridge type :)

Thanks for the kind words and stay safe.

Wow! Neat picture! I was a huge fan of the show and actually found this blog through a discussion thread on imdb.com (though being American I knew it as “Rin Tin Tin K9 Cop” but Rudy/Rinty/whatever…) My little brother and I watched the reruns and new eps religiously on the family channel in the early 90s and after “Rin Tin Tin and the Paris Conspiracy” came out we tried to teach our little beagle/terrier dog to do the things Rinty did…that didn’t work so well. Anyway, neat site, and here’s hoping for a future DVD release!

I can’t believe how great and underrated of a TV series “Katts and Dog”, it was well put together, and made me very nostalgic for my childhood in the 90. I know there is no plans for a DVD, but on YouTube, http://www.youtube.com/user/Timbo2k5
thus guy has posted nearly all of your episodes. Just wanted to say what a great actor you were.

Hey Jesse! This is really awesome that you have a website…I had no idea. Somebody sent me the link to this page on youtube…it’s very nice to see a more recent photo of you and Denise. I’ve been posting the episodes of Katts & Dog on youtube and I’m hoping it will boost the show in popularity and possibly help get it a dvd release. I could go on quite a bit but I will keep this short…there’s one thing I wondered for quite a while. What happened to Rudy after the show ended? Was he owned by somebody from the show and I was curious how old he lived to be? If you have any information on that it would be interesting to know. Thanks for your time and just so you know, you were a fantastic actor on the show, you fit the role perfectly.

    Hi Tim:

It’s a pleasure to hear from you, and thanks for your kind comments. Yes, I’ve been having a good chuckle at the episodes that you have been posting on YouTube; there seems to be a bit of renewed interest in the old show, perhaps because we’re all getting a little long in the tooth. I received an invite to a Facebook Group. Not sure who’s behind that, but I doubt that I will be joining—it feels a little too self-absorbed to spend time rehashing the show in a place like that, as much fun as it was… :)

Having said that, I do want to say thanks for posting the old episodes. I don’t have any of them, and haven’t seen them for many years: we’ve had a few good laughs and they have rekindled a lot of great memories!

Rudy (or at least the dog that did 90% of the primary acting on the show, whose real name was Ike)lived a long and happy life in Los Angeles after the show finished production. Dogs—as much as we love them—don’t live forever. He passed away a few years ago but he made it to a ripe old age and had a great life. I’ll check with my buddies who trained the dogs on the show on the exact age that Ike lived to and report it in a future post. He was a great pal of mine, and I still think about him. Thanks again for putting up the episodes. We’ve been getting a real kick out of them.

    Dear Jesse,

I was directed to your blog 3 days ago, and I’ve spent the last 2 trying to work up the nerve to write you a message. I’ve been a fan of yours for nearly 20 years, ever since I first saw your show. I tuned in religiously, along with my younger sister. For us, even though we were close in age, we had little in common, except for our appreciation for Hank, Steve, and Rinty.

I’m very excited that someone has been kind enough to upload some of the episodes onto YouTube. The first season wasn’t shown here, so I’m seeing those episodes for the first time, but it’s like I’ve met up with old friends again. When the show ended, my sister and I were disappointed, but we continued to watch our VHS tapes, and we followed you as best we could as you moved onto other projects. (I remember going to see The Santa Clause at the movie theater, and almost getting kicked out because we had a shrieking fit when you appeared on the screen. Slightly embarrassing, but we were excited!)

It’s wonderful to see that life is treating you well. You have a beautiful family, by the way. My husband hasn’t quite grasped the greatness of the show, but I just wanted to let you know how much it meant to me, and how much I loved it, and your part of it. If it’s ever released on DVD, I’ll be one of the first to buy it.

    Best wishes,
    Dionne

    Dionne:

Well, thank you so much for those nice thoughts. I certainly don’t want to appear that I spend all of my days reminiscing about the years spent doing the show, but when I read a note like yours it’s tough not to smile.

We had a tremendous time making the show; we worked long hours but laughed often and created lasting friendships. And when I occasionally hear from folks who got such enjoyment out of the shows we made, well, it really makes me feel good. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts, they’ve made my day. Your husband sounds like my fifteen-year old, who doesn’t quite ‘get it’ either — but he gets a laugh watching his old man running around like a super-hero! :)

Best wishes also for you and your family. And I’ll be watching along with you on YouTube if anymore of the ol’ chestnuts roll out!

    I love the picture.

I remember like (I think back in 1997) I had started watching katts and Dog and it was on the Showcase Channel. I forget how I started watching it, I guess I was flapping through the channels and started watching it randomly. It would come on at 5:30 or 5:00 (think it was 5:30). I would get very disappoint if I missed it and would tape very show.

Unfortunately, the tapes were taped over (I used to tape a lot of movies and shows too and accidentally taped over it :(. ) I gotta through my tapes and might still have one. I’m so happy that there on Youtube! I’ve seen some I’ve never seen before. There are about 10n shows (I think) that I watch, and Katts and Dog is still my favorite. If only it would come to DVD, I would buy every season no matter how much they were.

Everything about the show is great, acting, music etc. I love the intro song! Honestly, it is the best music I’ve ever heard! I have an MP3 of the one from season 5 and listen to it everyday. I’ve sent some of my friends the Youtube link to the intro and a few of them really like it!

Katts and Dog also has a lot of great lines. One of my favorites is “Get’em Rudy!”

Ever since I first started watching this show, I wanted to be a K-9 police officer and have a German Shepherd (named Rudy of course). I admire how smart he is, he’s like 1 in a billion.

    Katts and Dog forever!!!

    Hi Jesse,

This is so great! I´ve regularly been browsing the internet to find information on Katts & Dog (or Rin Tin Tin K-9
Cop as I originally knew it), but it seems there is very little out there. And now this site!

I loved the show when I was in the US as an exchange student, and watched it seven days a week. Unfortunately
I had only saved a dozen eps on video (which I couldn´t watch for years because of the NTSC/PAL-videoproblem).
But I may have some good news for everyone here: three seasons of Rin Tin Tin are definitely out on dvd – in
    French!
Minus-point: everything has been dubbed, and there are no subtitles, so you have to fully rely on your
ability to understand spoken French. My four years ancient high school French is sufficient to more or less
follow the story, which is more than sufficient to love it again, even though I´m sure I´m missing out on most
    of the jokes…
Good point: the dubbing has been done with exceptional care, and the dubbed voices of the main characters
are so close to the originals that there´s no doubt who is saying what. It almost seems like the actors were
actually speaking French in front of the camera!
The dvd´s (PAL, region 2) are available from the French Amazon-site, for 20-30 euro for about 16 episodes.

May I just ask you something? I´ve never seen the last season (maybe I should check out youtube then…), but
I´ve always wanted to know: did Hank marry Renee in the end? It would seem a perfect ending of the show to me –
if it now had to end one day… If not, I might just write my own ending in a fanfic!

Thanks again to all the people who helped create this great show, but most especially to the people who made
me love it so much: you, Andrew, Denise, Denis, Dan, Cali and of course Rinny. You guys did a great job!

    Thanks, Margherita…

In answer to your question, no – Hank never married Renee. What an ending that would’ve been! To be honest, I can’t even recall how it ended – there was no definitive moment. It just sort of carried on into perpetuity ;)

Funny to see you mention the cast all by our real first names! Thanks for making me smile today :)

    Cheers

  25. Posted July 11, 2009 at 8:01 am | Permalink

Well, it´s no use thanking Hank and Stevie and Renée etc, is it? ;-) After all, they´re just fictional characters, and
don´t even exist. But it´s you guys who made those people to what they were: the ones we got to love. Had the
parts been played by other actors, it would not have been the same Katts & Dog. (Though I do suppose Rinty
would have been the same; I doubt whether a dog knows the difference between “playing” and “playing a part”, no
    matter how smart he is…)

As for Hank marrying Renée: I´ve been catching up a bit on youtube this past week, discovering that Renée wasn´t
even in the final series… (And something really feels missing when watching those eps.) So I´ll just have to think of
something to explain her absence there and have Hank marry her after the end of the series. For reacquainting
myself with season 4 really enforced the impression that Hank and Renée were getting more than friends there. Even
Steve seemed to think so – and not mind one bit ;-D

Is there dvd out there some where? I was 6 or 7 yrs old when the showed aired. So I did not remeber a lot of things.

Like why is the first and second season the dog name was rudy? And in 4 and 5 him was Rinne?
These are just more thing I thought of since I last post.

And hey it still hot here. I am ready to move some where colder. May be not the winter here are pretty good ones. I am in the woods

I’m probably going to be up all night reading your entries. Thank you SO much for everything you’ve done and the smiles and laughter you brought to so many people over the years.

@Katie – thanks for your email. Yes, I’ve been enjoying the Youtube versions as well. They really are a trip down memory lane as we made the show many years ago. Your Rudy / Rinty question is a good one: for Canadian versions of the show, we said “Rudy” because Canadian Content rulings for financing stated that ‘Rin Tin Tin’ was an American reference, and the show would not qualify for tax credits if it was called that, as it was in the States. So in Canada, the show was called Katts & Dog — and the dog was called Rudy :)

Annie: Great to hear from you. I have a number of business interests now, but rarely do any on-camera acting. If I do in the near future, I’ll post it here at the blog. But I wouldn’t hold your breath!

    Thanks for the lovely comments.

Wow!!! Over the past three weeks, I’ve been taking a trip down memory lane. I remember watching Rin Tin Tin K9 Cop when I was a kid. I vaguely remembered Season 1, and was surprised to see I had only watched a handfull of the episodes. I’ve watched every You Tube episode available twice since re-discovering it. I must admit that I LOVE the Uncle/nephew-turn-father/son relationship on this show. This is so special – no bad language, no nudity…just good ol’ family entertainment! Thank you to you and all the actors/actresses he brought us this show for five seasons. I hope this show comes out on DVD so that we can ALL enjoy the “missing” episodes…

I just wanted to tell you that I think you and allt he others did an EXCELLENT job both with the domestic scenes, and the on-the-job scenes…and that was sure one AMAZING dog!

I have a quick question. There is an episode of Katts and Dog that you sing and play the guitar in. I was wondering (if you remember this) if you have ever sung professionaly – you had a GREAT voice in the song – and if the song you sang was an actual song, or one made up for the show. I think the episode was “Friendly Persuasion” in Season 3.

I grew up watching this on TV when it aired. Do you Know if there any plans for it to reair or for a DVD? Do you still keep in touch with some of the cast and crew that did the show?
Where was Rin Tin TinK-9 cops filmed and where or was Hank Katts house a real house or a set?
I would like to track down the old shows. I found the one on youtube. But I know there are more out there. Were they put in the trash after so many years?.. Thank you for your time

    Thanks for your message, Casey.

I’m not aware of any plans for a DVD of the show; to be frank, I’m not even sure who currently owns the rights to it. Filming was predominantly in Toronto, Canada, although for a couple of seasons (2 and 3, I think) we spent part of the year shooting in Paris, France. The exterior of the house was in a great Toronto neighbourhood called Kensington Market, and except for Season 1, the interior was in a studio.
