I have to agree with you there: alternatives have to be presented. But to be fair, they have to be developed and to develop alternatives there needs to be political will through supporting research and development. If we'd started in January of 2000 with a plan to reduce our dependency on fossil fuels, and to reward our best and brightest minds by funding that research, we would be a lot farther ahead. And that is partisan, I admit.

I get pissed with energy critics of any political stripe who never offer a viable alternative to the use of non-renewable resources and that’s exactly what Von Hoffman is guilty of in his article. I have to assume that he is proposing that the US make the switch to high speed electric trains to replace the current crop of diesel electrics.
If my assumption is correct then it follows that Von Hoffman is also a proponent of nuclear energy in as much as 75% of France’s electric energy is nuclear. If that’s not the case then what is his practical alternative? I didn’t see that anywhere in the article. Surely he isn’t endorsing the construction of more coal fired generating stations.

Of course they have a common agenda – that’s why they belong to the same organization. I’ll go a step further – I wish we could get some neo-conservatives into the discussion so that the environment could be dealt with as a non-partisan issue.
Even if we were to suppose for a minute that global warming was overhyped, isn’t it still sensible to look for ways to reduce our dependency on non-renewable resources? And if the liberal democrats are the first ones to figure that out, should that mean that it’s not valid?
Heck, even George has conceded it’s a problem.

Read the piece on the ethanol hoax. I might lend it more credence if Michael Moore, Jesse Jackson and Gore Vidal weren’t members of the Nation Associate group or the likes of Tom Hayden wasn’t on the Editorial Board.You don’t suppose these folk have a common agenda?
